But what if you are not familiar with them?

As I said, the internet and technology have grown significantly over the past decade. So, free tools and software can help you start a website in just a few minutes.

If you don’t know how to code, I recommend using a content management system (CMS) like WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Ghost, etc. Among these, the best and cheapest is WordPress. However, before working on it, you need to be familiar with the system.

The good news is that hundreds of free YouTube videos will teach you to start a website using WordPress.

You need three things to begin.

1. Domain name: The name of your website. For example, mywebsite.com. You must purchase a domain name for universal names like .com, .net, .org, etc. However, if you want a free domain name (.com.np), you can quickly get it here.
2. Web hosting:  You need a server to store your website files and folders. Web hosting allows you to do that and access your site from anywhere in the world with the help of the internet. 3. CMS: After getting web hosting, you must install a CMS like WordPress.

After you have these elements, you can work on the design and modifications of your website. Having a CMS allows you to easily navigate through the contents of your website.

Types of Websites

There are different types of websites you can build. Depending on the content you want to create, you choose which category website you want to start.

You can start a blog and write articles. It can be related to any topic and niche of your choice. For example, you can create a blog about health, music, news, automobiles, technology, etc. An online newspaper and media website also lies in this category. Remember, you must be interested in the topic to make it easier to create the content.

Next, you can also start an e-commerce to sell your products. If you have an e-commerce site, you can make money directly from sales and other monetization strategies, which we will discuss later in this article.

Many artists, creators, businesses, and individuals also have a portfolio website showcasing their work. This type of website is suitable for personal branding.

Create content

Now that you know how to build a website, you must work on content creation. If you have a blog, start writing articles. The trick to making money online with a website is to get more traffic on your site. And it is only possible when you share valuable content.

Research what type of articles do well. Find what people search for and write about them. The crucial point is that your content should help people and make their lives easier.

If you run an e-commerce store, upload products. Share them with your customers. Let people know about your business.

Do the same with the portfolio site.

Important: Do not focus on making money from day one. That is not how this works. It takes a lot of time, effort, and patience before you begin earning passive income from your blog in Nepal. You might have to share many content for free. Do it. The point is that people should know about your work first. Once your site gets attention, you can only capitalize from it.

Once you have created a good volume of content on your website (at least 15-20 articles), you can apply for Google Adsense. It allows Google to show ads on your website on a shared revenue basis. It means you don’t need to worry about finding and inserting ads. Instead, Google will do it for you. However, it will take a particular portion of the ad revenue.

As of this writing, Google says:

For displaying ads with AdSense for content, publishers receive 68% of the revenue recognized by Google in connection with the service. For AdSense for search, publishers receive 51% of the revenue recognized by Google.

You can also use alternative advertisement platforms like Ezoic, Media.net, etc.

Another way to use ads on your site is through direct communication with the brands and companies. If your site gets good traffic, you can directly approach businesses if they are interested in showing ads on your site.

Many Nepali websites like OnlineKhabar, ShareSansar, Hamrobazaar, etc., use the same advertising methods. But they have millions of traffic each month. So, you can’t expect that to happen sooner on your site.

So, the best option is to use Google Adsense. If your site gets 15,000+ views per month, you can generate at least $100 using Google Ads on your site.

2. Selling products

You can sell products directly from your website. It is evident if you have an e-commerce site. You will have a direct source of income if you do so.

However, even if you don’t have an e-commerce site, you can still sell digital products like e-books, courses, templates, books, checklists, designs, and more. I’ve made over $350 selling e-books that cost less than $3 per book. Some of my free e-books have also generated passive income.

To sell digital products, you need to first create one. Then, you need to upload the product to your website. You can also use third-party sites like Gumroad, Payhip, Amazon, etc., and then link to them through your site.

3. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a strategy to promote the products and services of companies and businesses and earn passive income. This marketing strategy is mainly used by content creators like bloggers, YouTubers, and social media influencers to make money.

The affiliates (individuals and companies who promote products) make commissions for every sale or sign-up through their referrals. You can consider affiliates as online sales representatives.

Several affiliate programs in Nepal allow you to become an affiliate for a company or brand. After that, you can share their products and earn a commission on each sale.

Ever since I heard about passive income,  it has intrigued me. I wanted to know what it was and how to make money through it.

• Start a blog.
• Make videos on YouTube.

These were some ideas I found online regarding passive income sources.

I started looking into all the ways to make passive income.

But, sadly, there were only a few options to do so living in Nepal.

For instance, starting a blog was doable. But monetizing it with Google Adsense, affiliate marketing, and other methods was tough.

Similarly, making Youtube videos was easy. But growing an audience was hard. Even if you reached 1000 subscribers, creating real, sustainable passive income from Nepal was tough.

Starting a blog

I started a blog back in 2016, thinking I would monetize it with Google Adsense and earn passive income. But, my plan failed miserably. My blog sucked—it had less than 10 views, and it broke down because of technical errors.

After 4 years, I gave another shot at blogging. During the 2020 Covid pandemic, I started a personal blog and wrote articles there.

Furthermore, I learned about building websites, email marketing, content marketing, and freelancing.

I was also able to monetize my blog with Google Adsense. But, as I said before, it was tough making money off display ads.

Even though I wasn’t making any money (or making only a tiny sum), I didn’t stop writing. I loved it.

So, I explored more platforms where I could write and connect with others.

Writing and selling an eBook

After a year of writing, I decided to publish an eBook.

But the hard part was selling it. I researched many platforms in Nepal, but none supported selling digital products like eBooks.

I was frustrated. Nepal has a lot of restrictions regarding receiving and sending international payments for selling products. So, I could not use a global platform too.

At last, I decided to give away my eBook for free.

I have written three eBooks so far, and two are free.

Fortunately, I was able to develop a strategy that allowed me to sell my eBook to my international audience and make a passive income. I will discuss my approach in this article.

How to earn passive income in Nepal by selling digital products?

Before getting into the steps, I would like to address the meaning of “digital products.” Digital products are intangible goods that exist in digital form. Examples include ebooks, graphic design, courses, stock photography, templates, music/audio, videography, apps, etc.

In this article, I will be giving the example of an eBook as it is a primary product for me.

Below are the steps you can follow to create digital products, sell them, and make a passive income in Nepal.

Step 1: Build an audience.

Before creating and selling your digital product, you must build an audience because they will be your potential customers.

How do you build an audience?

Create lots of free online content.

You must first build your online portfolio and get recognized by people in your niche.

If you want to sell stock photographs (for example), allow people to see your work first. Use social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

I create blog posts, articles, and social media posts as a writer. I wrote free blog posts for more than a year before making my first digital product (eBook).

So, start creating content. And remember to provide value through your work. This will increase your followers, viewers, and subscribers. In other words, you will build an audience.

Step 2: Create a digital product.

People know who you are now. It’s time to create your digital product.

Write an eBook, create a course, build an app; whatever your expertise is, do it.

Take time building your product. Make sure it provides value because nobody likes to spend money on something that is not beneficial to them.

I wrote my third eBook (the one I’m selling currently) in one month. So, thirty days of hard work has provided be a lifetime of potential income.

Step 3 (IMPORTANT): Choose a platform and set up a payment method.

This step is crucial because it is where creators in Nepal fail. We do not have online platforms to sell digital products. I’ve already said that.

Our government does not support PayPal and other international payment systems. Sad!!!

Freelancers and creators with many skills are bound to miss out on opportunities.

I’ll be sharing my exact method of how I chose a platform and set up a payment method.

I write on Medium, a platform for writers worldwide to read, write, and connect. I have a good following there. Through Medium, I learned about a platform called Gumroad that allows writers to sell their digital products independently.

Upon experimentation, I found that Gumroad is not suitable for me. Then, I found a similar platform called Payhip, which worked perfectly. So, if you are looking for a place to sell your digital product from Nepal, use Payhip (click here to join it using my affiliate link).

How to get paid?

What I did was I asked a friend living in Australia to open a bank account in his name so that I could use it to send my payments.

Then I signed up on a website called Stripe (which is similar to PayPal) to receive payments from Payhip. I linked my Stripe account with the bank account I created through my friend in Australia.

Whenever people buy my eBook, the money goes to my Stripe account first. Then, after a few days, they automatically send it to the bank account. My friend will then transfer it to my bank account here in Nepal.

Important note: If you want to use this method, make sure that your friend living in Australia or another international country is trustworthy. It is better to have a sibling or cousin whom you can trust more.

Step 4: Market your product to your audience.

I market my eBook by writing about it on Medium. Moreover, I also share it on LinkedIn and write blog posts on my website.

Here are a few things you can do:

• Write about your product on Medium (like I do) and post a link for people to buy.
• Post on social media (frequently).
• Repurpose your post and send it to all platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.
• Make Youtube videos about it and post links in the description.
• Use paid ads on Google and Facebook to promote your product.

Step 5: Earn passive income.

The last step is to earn passive income through your product. The beauty about selling digital products is that you only have to create them once, and they can make money throughout your lifetime.

However, keep experimenting with ways to promote your product. Do not rely on a single strategy.

You can start building more products and sell them online using the methods I described here.

But, if your salary is Rs. 50,000 per month, the same Rs. 1 lakh has less value because you can earn it in only two months. Instead, Rs. 1 crore will be huge for you.

Human needs keep growing. We always want more and are hardly satisfied with what we have at the moment. So, learn to have control over your needs first. Do you genuinely wish for that much money? Will it make you happy? What if you are still unhappy after having the money of your dreams?

For most people, becoming rich means having financial freedom. You want to not worry about money and do what you want to in life. As we said, we have different views about money and becoming rich.

There is no specific way to become rich. It’s not a mathematical formula that shows you the path to riches. Instead, there are many ways and strategies that you need to follow. Most importantly, the path to becoming rich is not easy. There is no shortcut to it.

1. Mindset

Your mindset is crucial in becoming rich. It sounds cliché, but it’s true. You must have a positive mindset and believe that you can and will be rich.

To achieve something externally, you have to do it internally first. For example, before you buy a car or motorcycle, you see yourself riding it. You dream of going on rides with your loved ones. It happens in your mind first, and only then does it become a reality.

Similarly, if your goal is to become rich, first, you must do it in your head. Only then you can do it in reality. Practicing visualization and affirmations that help you grow your beliefs and become self-confident.

Develop a positive self-image. Your past life does not determine your future. You can always change your future. If you can build this mindset, you are one step ahead to becoming wealthy.

Saving money won’t make you rich. Yes, that’s true. The only way you can save your way to become rich is to earn lakhs per month and live a poverty life. But that is not possible. We humans have needs. So, when we see more money, we want to buy more things.

It doesn’t have to be a big business. There are ways to keep your day job and still have multiple sources of income. Go online and learn, study the riches, and find opportunities. Start a side hustle. There are a lot of ways to make money. You just have to be willing to find them and learn about them. Here are a few popular ones.

What does owning a business mean? Does it mean you have to start your own company and sell products and services to people? Sure, that would be great if you could do it.

But, there are other ways to own a business without working directly for the company. It is by investing in companies. Buying company stocks is an example. When you own stock in a company, it means you are a part-owner of it.

There are mainly two ways you can own a piece of a business in Nepal.

Among the two, the first one is doable for everyone. So, learn about the stock market. There is free information online. Start investing today.

Starting a business is also feasible, but you need proper research, planning, and knowledge. So, if you have a good idea and execution ability, a business will make you rich in Nepal.

Passive income is something you earn without actively working for it. However, most people often mistake passive income for something you make without working. That is not true.

You have to work. The difference between active and passive income is that active income is where your earning comes directly from work. Whereas in passive income, your earning comes from the work you are not doing currently.

If you want to become rich and wealthy, passive income is the way. You can never become rich by working at a 9-5 job. Think about every wealthy person you know. They are rich because they make passive income.
